I like to think of Sheers as the lipgloss of nail polish because they can be worn alone OR layered. Sheers can also be incredibly glowy, buildable, functional, AND customizable. And if you have trouble with some of your favorite hard to paint double black diamond shades (think GH, HGC, HD), Sheers might just be your new BFF helping you look like a legit pro. Have I convinced you yet? No? Hear me out…
Roll Call!
Let’s meet the Sheers:
How to use Sheers:
Some favorite layering combos:
Honest & True + CCT, AW + BEB, Sweet & Gracious + CCT, Besties + EC, MG + EC, WKF + EC.
Well, after all that, if you aren’t convinced I don’t know what to tell ya. Now go, run off and PLAY because Sheers want to find their way into all your mani’s. They’ve been lonely. And you just might find they’re the best kept mani secret in your collection!
]]>Before you polish your nails, it's essential you prep your nails properly so your polish goes on smoothly and lasts a long time!
Choose a polish of your choice and pop on Poppy. Never shake your polish (this causes bubbles), always roll the bottle in your hands.
Our polishes can be organized into 3 different categories:
Beginner - super forgiving and easy shades like sheers, metallics, and glitters.
Intermediate - opaque shades that paint in 2 coats, slightly more challenging
Advanced - light, chalky pastel shades or super dark shades - usually 3 coats, the most challenging
Once you've chosen your polish, you're ready to paint. The secret to painting like a pro is to paint thin coats and to let each coat dry. We recommend waiting at least 5-10 minutes in between each coat. This will make your polish last longer, dry quicker over all, and reduce bubbles.
Lift the polish brush out of the bottle and wipe one side of the brush against the neck of the bottle, pulling the brush towards you. Place the polished side in the middle of your first nail, then press down gently so the bristles fan out a bit. Without lifting the brush off the nail yet, push the brush towards the base of the cuticle, getting close to the cuticle without touching it. Then pull the brush back down the center of the nail towards the tip. Then polish to the left and right sides of the first stroke to cover the nail.
Each coat should be nice and thin— don't worry if your first coat is streaky! It's always better to do more, thinner coats than to try to get full coverage in fewer coats. Try to paint each nail in 2-3 strokes. We like to paint: Middle, Side, Side, but whatever works best for you.
After letting your first coat dry for at least 5-10 minutes, apply your second. This time, start your brush at the base of the cuticle (no need to start in the middle of the nail and push, like the first coat. You already have the first layer as your foundation done). If you find that you have too much polish on your brush, wipe some of the polish off on the side of the bottle before painting.
If you make a mistake, simply dip the finger back in the Remover Pot to wipe it clean and start over. Easy! Psst… Even SGT regularly makes a mistake and starts over at least once a mani.
Once you've finished polishing, you're ready to move on to Top Coat.
]]>Poppy is made of super soft silicone and was designed with industrial engineers. It fits on top of almost every nail polish bottle (not just ours) and helps reduce shaking and give you a comfy grip as you paint. Poppy also has the perfect weight to help steady your hands.
To use Poppy, first pop off the overcap on our polish by pulling straight up and off. Next, find the flat side of the brush. The flat side of the brush is the wider, fan-shaped side of the brush. Once you've found the flat side, place the brush back in the bottle (don't twist it back in, just place it in the bottle).
Next, line up the flat side of the brush with the flat side of Poppy. Pop on Poppy by shimmying it on top of the cap, leaving a little bit of the white innercap visible.
If you’re using one of our newer bottles (Summer 21 and onwards), the inner cap of our polish has a handy marker to designate where the flat side of the brush is. With these brushes, you can slide Poppy right on top, no need to find the brush side first.
If you pushed too hard, the brush might be stuck inside Poppy and you'll need to wiggle it out. Ask a friend or use tweezers if it's really stuck in there.
Then you're ready to start painting! Poppy was originally designed to rest in the palm of your hand but experiment with different placements to find the most comfortable position for you.
]]>MANI 101
The 5 basic steps are:
Before you get started, our manicures are all 100% waterless - avoid washing your hands right before painting your nails and don’t soak your hands in water, etc. Water causes chipping, and no one wants that!
STEP 1: SHAPE
Our shaping <hyperlink> philosophy is the 90/10 rule. Use your clippers to achieve 90% of your desired length and shape, and use the file for last 10% —just smoothing the details. Smooth out the edges with your nail file for the last 10%. We always recommend filing your nails in one direction. This helps avoid shredding or peeling at the tip, and it helps you slow down.
TIP: We always like to shape with our old polish on. It helps us see the final shape. The whites of our nails can often be uneven and misleading, so this trick always helps us get a more perfect shape.
STEP 2: PREP
Gently push back cuticles with your thumbnail and use your buffer to smooth them away. A super light, gentle buff is all you need. Don't overbuff, so as not to unnecessarily thin out your nails.
TIP: Unless you’re a licensed professional, we don’t recommend cutting your cuticles. You can hurt yourself and even cause an infection. We recommend only clipping any skin that is hanging with your nail clipper.
Finish with a dip in the Remover Pot to prep nails for polish. After this dip, remember to not touch anything and don't wash your hands. Introducing any water or oil will make your beautiful polish chip.
STEP 3: POPPY + POLISH
Pop on Poppy <hyperlink> for a super steady paint job. Line up the flat side of Poppy with the flat side of your brush. Apply 2-3 thin coats of your favorite polish. Remember to wait at least 5-10 minutes between each coat to let it dry. Each coat should be nice and thin— don't worry if your first coat is streaky! It's always better to do 2-3 thin coats than too few thick ones.
Clean up any mistakes and perfect your polish lines with the Clean Up Brush. Dip the brush gently in the Remover Pot and swipe away any mistakes.
STEP 4: TOP COAT
Apply a thin coat of Super Glossy Top Coat to add shine and protect your mani.
Tip: We recommend you reapply Top Coat every 2-3 days to keep your mani looking fresh and shiny. It will also help keep your mani from chipping.
STEP 5: HYDRATE
Once polish is completely dry, apply 2-3 clicks of Cuticle Serum to hydrate. We like to apply Cuticle Serum 2-3x a day to keep everything happy and hydrated. For extra hydration credit, apply Hand Serum at least once daily.
